Learn about Doodles
The History of Doodles
In the 1990s, breeders began to widely crossbreed the Golden Retriever and the Poodle. Goldendoodles are bred in three different sizes, corresponding to the size of the poodle used as a parent.
The Standard Goldendoodle typically stands 20 to 24 inches tall and weighs 51 to 80 pounds. The Medium Goldendoodle typically stands 17 to 20 inches and weighs 36 to 50 pounds. The Miniature Goldendoodle typically stands up to 20 inches and weighs 15 to 35 pounds. The lifespan of a Goldendoodle is generally 10-15 years.
Golden Retrievers are known to be highly intelligent dogs. They are also very loving and social. When bred with the poodle, another loving and intelligent dog, the result is an incredible companion that is active, loyal, loving, and a pet that is excellent with children. Goldendoodles, due to their temperament and intelligence, are popular pets that can be trained to be therapy and guide dogs.
Grooming Your Doodle
Goldendoodles are known for their shaggy and curly coat. It is important to groom your Goldendoodle regularly to avoid matting. Goldendoodles often receive the popular “teddy bear” cut that provides an attractive face with an adorable coat.
Although the Goldendoodle may shed some, it is minimal when brushed regularly. Similarly, their coat is “allergy friendly.” Most allergies are caused by dander (dead skin cells shed alongside fur) rather than the dog’s coat.
Goldendoodles are natural people pleasers. This allows them to be trained easily. They love reinforcement whether it be with small treats or positive affirmation of their work.
